An exciting season, Spring brings the transformation of our vines from an apparent death to miraculous growth that demands diligent attention.  Several critical tasks determine the success of both this year's crop and the formation of next year's.  Abundant Winter rainfall is a mixed blessing as the vine's explosive growth appears to have no slowdown.  Disease and weed control as well as nutrients for supporting a healthy bloom are key areas of attention for the vineyard manager.

  • Bud Break I: early mildew prevention, canopy management, fertilizer program (VASCM newsletter, March 2005)
  • Bud Break II: early mildew prevention, canopy management, fertilizer program, gophers & pests (VASCM newsletter, April 2006)
  • Bloom I: mildew control (spraying/thinning), till/no-till (VASCM newsletter, May 2005)
  • Bloom II: frost damage, mildew inspections & spraying, thinning, weed control.  (VASCM Newsletter, May 2008).
  • Bloom III: early mildew prevention, Nitrogen and early nutrition assessment, weed control (VASCM newsletter, March 2009)
